Led by Farm Folk City Folk’s Northern Seed Security Program Coordinator, this initiative supported apprenticeship, mentorship, and on-farm training by funding new farmers and honouring producers for sharing their skills and knowledge. Community meals and farm tours, co-hosted with local chefs, celebrated regional foods—raising awareness of abundant fruits, vegetables, meat, and seafood while strengthening sustainable food and seed systems in the North.

Story of Impact
The story below was shared by this initiative as their Most Significant Transformation Story, submitted as part of their final report. It reflects the perspectives and experiences of individuals involved in each initiative.
The most significant transformation I witnessed during our initiative “Supporting and Celebrating Food Producers in the North” was the meaningful connections formed between participants in apprenticeship, training and mentorship programs. Financial support for new and aspiring farmers created opportunities to connect with other emerging food producers to build a sense of community that is often difficult to achieve in one season of farming.
Farming can be solitary work, a challenge that is amplified in the North by vast distances between communities and farms. It was therefore inspiring to see apprentices, mentees, and trainees able to gather and connect at on-farm events across the region. These gatherings and apprenticeships allowed participants to learn and build relationships beyond a single farm in one season, to engage in Food Sovereignty and deepen their understanding of the long history of food production, witness culturally meaningful, regional food systems; and explore a range of farm models and how they have evolved and established themselves in Northern Communities.
Producing and procuring food in small, rural communities can be a challenging way to make a living. By supporting and celebrating food producers, this project helped emerging growers and existing producers connect with each other, often for the first time, and it enhanced and invigorated connections with a supportive community that values local and regional foodshed.
